Rabbit rabbit
As often as I can remember to do so, I say “rabbit rabbit” first thing in the morning on the first day of a new month. I’ve heard other variations on this — “white rabbit,” or saying it three times, but “rabbit rabbit” has always been my favorite. It’s supposed to bring good luck for the rest of the month. I’m really hoping that’ll be true for July.
Now that it’s July, my plan to stop reaching out to agents and publishers and start moving forward with self-publishing is officially in effect. I’ve already reached out to a couple of editors on Upwork, and one of them has gotten back to me with a sample of edits to the book that I think are pretty great.
In a few days, I’m going to go off-grid for a bit to return to Deerfields, the site of my first-ever regional burn in 2016. I’m overjoyed to get to go back there after almost a decade away, and plan on spending much of my time there just floating in the lake. Once that event concludes, I’ll be striking west with my dear friend Chris Holt on a road trip to Colorado. We don’t yet have a plan of exactly how we’re getting there, which feels fun and exciting, and spiritually very in-line with the year I’ve had so far.
When I get back to Pittsburgh in mid-July, I’m going to be heads-down for awhile, working with the editor of my choice to get Firebug as polished as we can get it, and moving the plot of Loop, Nevada forward, with intentions to publish that one in 2026. I’ve been moving around a lot lately, and the idea of just being in Pittsburgh and working on these projects for a few months sounds amazing right now. I’m hoping to see lots of progress on both projects between now and the end of the month.
